Essential Questions

What is the ServiceLearning Group ( SLG ) trying to accomplish?

SLG wants to establish a state-of-the-art learning center that caters itself to all levels of learning methodologies and practices, and is focused on differentiated learning and teaching styles. From brain-learning research there are three kinds of learner differences based on the neural transmission networks in the brain and they are:

  1. Recognition Networks which is the “What” of learning. This network is specialized to sense and assign meaning to patterns we see; they enable us to identify and understand information, ideas, and concepts. Recognition goals focus on specific content, and that content is key.
  2. Strategic Networks which is the “How” of learning. This network specializes in generating and overseeing mental and motor patterns. For strategic goals that focuses on a specific process or medium, the process or medium is key.
  3. Affective Networks which is the “Why” of learning. This network specializes to evaluate patterns and assign them emotional significance; they enable us to engage with tasks and learning and with the world around us. Attending to affective issues when considering students’ needs is an integral component of instruction, and it can increase teaching effectiveness significantly. Affective goals focus on a particular value or emotional outcome, and emotional outcome is key.

Attention to all three networks is critical for understanding individual needs and strengths and for determining individually appropriate teaching methods and materials. The fundamental nature of the recognition, strategic, and affective networks form a framework we can use to analyze our students’ individual strengths and weaknesses and understand their individual differences.

We also plan keep children busy, productive and engaged and off the streets, and engaged during the time they get out of school until late evenings when parents arrive home from work. SLG plans to uplift the names and image of our sponsors as those who are concerned about the plight of our youth and the community.

What are the anticipated results of your work to which you plan to hold yourself accountable?

At the conclusion of the 2007 Spring semester I plan on having 5 tutors on staff (in the areas of math, reading, and writing), 10 clients from 2 client companies, 2 business sponsorships, 1 Special Events Director on staff, 2 Graphic Arts Co-Directors on staff, develop a grant proposal that will bring funds to forward the work of the organization. I will be personally responsible for establishing the annual multicultural event on Columbia University ’s campus, complete with press and media coverage.

During the summer recess months (May to mid September) I will develop 2 more sponsorships.

At the end of the 2007 Fall semester, I project to have 7 tutors, 20 clients, 4 partnerships, 1 e-newspaper, and 1 grant proposal approved.

I also anticipate that the math, reading comprehension, and writing results of those in the program have risen significantly since they have been coming to our center.

What work will you untake to meet your goals?

As President, I will recruit able personnel to carry out the school’s mission statement, to procure accounts and clients, and make necessary arrangements and contacts in organizing the multicultural festival April 12th, 2007.

How will you know your goals and objectives have been achieved? What indicators will you use to measure success?

When I see that the student has realized his classroom-taught knowledge into a real world artifact of usefulness that will be exhibited for all to see as a final project then I know that my goals have been achieved.

Developing a highly technical and advanced portfolio will show the highest level of work, achievement and commitment that could be presented at an interview.

Also when one constructs or creates a videoblog, blog and/or website that is based on knowledge gained from the classroom, and uses this educational instrument to display their culture, classroom knowledge and involvement within their community.
