Reflections on the Future of Instructional Technology
In the paper, Choosing our Future, Brent Wilson outlines that future technology will involve more web-style publishing and sharing: conference-style forums online and face-to-face, and involve communities of practice to the curriculum through instructional design. The development of automated design tools; effective procedures for replicable designs; and validated learning control for targeted objectives will be emphasized. These variables could change the way we work. Also we should be concerned with, but is harder to forecast, the improved methods of documenting and sharing practitioner expertise; assimilation of ideas and` methods from related fields; and better attention to the learning needs of the whole person.
The new media theory (MIT Press, 2004) says that gaming and simulated principles will be a part of instructional design. Network and presentation technologies have led to renewed emphasis on resource-based learning (Hill and Hannifin, 2001). More attention is given to resource development for e-learning than is true of a typical face-to-face course.
There are trends that will affect economies in emerging e-learning environment (cf.Wilson, 2002) such as:
* Large-scale learning technologies where learners lessen their dependence on the instructor through large-scale, self-sustaining learning forums inhabited by 100s or 1000s of learners (Wiley & Edwards, 2002);
* Disaggregation of products where individual markets may be identified with different pricing structures for different products.
* Communities of practice will be created where everyone belongs to some kind of community and those communities play a large role in shaping expectations for behavior.
Lastly, the most prominent issues facing instructional design are the changing role of the lecturer, changing student expectations and the advancement in technology.
Conclusion
You should now have a sense of what Service Learning is and isn't!
Try doing a new search on different scholastic level
Service-Learning Projects to see what you come up with.
What Now?
If your school doesn't offer Service-Learning, why not try starting a project yourself?
Ask your favorite teacher, guidance counselor or social worker for assistance
and recruit your friends to start a brand new project in your school.
